"The main thing that this score had to do was to supply the emotion from the characters' point of view; the fear they felt, the courage that John Connor needed to develop in order to face his future. This was the way I scored it, rather than just underscoring events that were happening. The pacing of the movie controlled the score, it had its own rhytm and the music had to play into that, accentuate it, but also get underneath the layer. I thought that the main focus of the movie was not the terminator, but the character of John Connor, and this became the underpinning for the complete score. I also thought it should be an orchestral score, but there was something very mechanical that needed to be adressed. This had to be done with electronics, so I knew I needed to spend a lot of time working on the electronic sounds that represented the mechanical nature of the characters."
